RED CEDAR SHINGLE SIDING- SHAKERTOWN’s 8 foot panels cedar shingle panels install much faster than individual shingles. They are sized to match stud spacing so little trimming is required. This technique saves up to 30% on overlap waste.

GEOTHERMAL SYSTEM - As the earth absorbs 47% of the sun's energy, its temperature remains constant at around 56 degrees (in our area). Our closed-loop geothermal system uses this stable temperature to cool or warm the home. The choice of a closed (versus open) system was the most debated issue among the team. In the end, though more eco-friendly as the water that runs through it is self-contained with no discharge required in the water table (as is the case for an open loop system). Water drawn from a single 480' well, circulates through earth as needed for heating or cooling and is then discharged into the same well. This circular process repeats itself as long as the heat pump is in operation.

*It should be noted that heat pumps use a reversible refrigeration system, the same reliable technology we all are familiar with in refrigerators. Instead of water, however, refrigerators use ambient air and only go in one direction from warm air to cold air.
STONEWORK - Three consecutive stone walls were built on the hill of the house to avoid land erosion and to allow better water-flow control. The walls used exclusively granite excavated from the site by the prior land owner.
RAINWATER COLLECTION SYSTEM - 2/1,500 gallon tanks were installed for rain water collected from roof drainage-please note that gray water usage is not allowed in our area. This water will be used for irrigation purposes only. When full, the tanks will slowly release the water through several underground perforated pipes.
LANDSCAPING - Fletcher Design Co. Because of the extensive stone wall construction, only partial planting was completed before winter. The vast majority of plants, trees and shrubs are native to the New-England region and require little irrigation. The small turf area facing the living room will be irrigated by rain water stored in our rain water collection tanks.
